people :: Mark Bear - Principal Investigator
Bear.JPG Dr. Mark Bear is a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator and is the Picower Professor of Neuroscience at the Picower Institute for Learning and Memory and the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  Prior to moving to MIT in 2003, Dr. Bear was on the faculty of Brown University Medical School for 17 years.  After receiving his B.S. degree from Duke University, he earned his Ph.D. in Neurobiology at Brown.  He took postdoctoral training from Dr. Wolf Singer at the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research in Frankfurt, Germany, and from Dr. Leon Cooper at Brown.  His honors include Young Investigator Awards from the Office of Naval Research (1988) and the Society for Neuroscience (1993), and the Brown University Class of 2000 Barrett Hazeltine Citation for Teaching Excellence.  He was elected as a Fellow of the Neurosciences Institute and Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives in 1999, the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2003, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2004, and the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology in 2005.  In 2006, Dr. Bear was the recipient of the William and Enid Rosen Research Award for outstanding contributions to our understanding of Fragile X Syndrome by the National Fragile X Foundation.  In January 2007, Dr. Bear was named the Director of The Picower Institute for Learning and Memory at MIT.
